FORTE General Information

  • Fast On-orbit Recording of Transient Events
  • Developed jointly by LANL and Sandia Nation Laboratories

FORTE Uses

  • Gather statistics on the characteristics of lightning radio-frequency emissions
    • pinpoint global lightning distribution to a six-mile resolution
    • can distinguish lightning from man-made electromagnetic signals
  • Detecting nuclear weapon detonations


FORTE History

  • Development began in 1992
  • Launched on 29 August 1997
    • $15 Million Launch
  • $35 Million Research/Developement
  • No longer operational
